Your First Visit

Adults and Parents

When you first visit, I will invite you to share what has motivated you to seek therapy at this time. Many people do not have a concrete sense of how they feel, why they feel what they feel or what might be contributing to symptoms. It is okay if you (or your child/teen) feel confused or inarticulate. Generally speaking, people who are nervous in the beginning feel a greater sense of relief by the end of the session. Approaching the end of the hour, I will review with you the primary concerns you have described and check back with you to make sure I have understood you correctly. From there I will describe how I think I might be of help to you, and we can discuss options for proceeding further.

Children and Teens

With children and teens, I typically consult with parents for the initial visit to gain an understanding of parental concerns and perspectives, followed by spending time interacting directly with the child/teen. This can vary quite a bit however, particularly with teens. The structure and framework for sessions is crucial and will be determined by a number of factors, including age, stage, parent/child relationship dynamics and presenting concern.
